How to use Score, Weight% and Letter grade field.

Event score > course final grade > GPA > Cumulative GPA process is one of the most complicated modules in Class Buddy. We see lots of room for improvement in this module and welcome any user opinions.

Current score calculation concept is based on our survey conducted at the end of last year.
We identified two most popular scenarios as follows.

Scenario 1) Use score and weighted %.

In this scenario, Each assignment has 100 point for perfect score and instructor typically assigns weight % for each type of coursework in syllabus.

Reports: 20%
Quizzes: 40%
Exams: 40%

If you have four reports, four quizzes and two exams, the above weight will be distributed follows.

Report 1: 5%
Report 2: 5%
Report 3: 5%
Report 4: 5%

Quiz 1: 10%
Quiz 2: 10%
Quiz 3: 10%
Quiz 4: 10%

Exam 1: 20%
Exam 2: 20%

Let's say, at the end of semester, you completed all the assignments and received following scores.

Report 1: 5% - 80/100
Report 2: 5% - 75/100
Report 3: 5% - 90/100
Report 4: 5% - 100/100

Quiz 1: 10% - 80/100
Quiz 2: 10% - 68/100
Quiz 3: 10% - 94/100
Quiz 4: 10% - 93/100

Exam 1: 20% - 90/100
Exam 2: 20% - 85/100

Total weighted average score : 85.75
(The total of "weight %" should be 100% for correct calculation)

In this scenario, you don't need to enter "Perfect score" because the perfect score is always 100. All you need is "Earned score" and "Weight %".

At the end of the course, instructor will determine your final course grade using the total score to letter grade conversion table looks like this.

A: 91 ~ 100
B: 81 ~ 90
C: 71 ~ 80 ...

Since your total weighted average score is 85.75, instruction will give you "B".
Once you get the final grade from instructor, you can enter the grade in Course information screen in Class Buddy.

Scenario 2) This is even simpler. No weight % is used here.

In this scenario, the weight (importance) of each assignment is determined based on its perfect score.

Let's say you have gotten following scores.

Report 1: 40/50
Report 2: 37.5/50
Report 3: 45/50
Report 4: 50/50

Quiz 1: 80/100
Quiz 2: 68/100
Quiz 3: 94/100
Quiz 4: 93/100

Exam 1: 180/200
Exam 1: 170/200

and the final score is simple total of all earned scores : 857.5

In this situation, "Perfect score" takes important role. Since perfect score gives the weight to each score items, we don't need "Weight %". All you need is "Earned score" and "Perfect score" and Class Buddy will do simple addition.

At the end of the course, instructor will determine your final course grade using the total score to letter grade conversion table looks like this.

A: 901 ~ 1000
B: 801 ~ 900
C: 701 ~ 800 ...

Since your total weighted average score is 857.5, instruction will give you "B".
Once you get the final grade from instructor, you can enter the grade in Course information screen in Class Buddy.

About Letter Grade field,

At the last survey, we also found only small portion of instructors are using above calculation scenarios and there are many-many-many other creative variations.

It was very hard to incorporate all those methods so that we added "Letter grade" field.

This field is original made for users who get A, B, C, D... grade for each assignment instead of numbered score.  However, it can also be used for any extra information.

The content of this field is displayed in score list screen so that, if your instructor is not using above two methods, you can use this field for your own score tracking.
